I Feel Pretty – A Bloody Bath of Laughs and Chills – Critique Review

I Feel Pretty is a short horror comedy film written, produced, and directed by Christopher Pierantoni which follows a young man who, while trying to enjoy himself with a nice bubble bath, is suddenly visited by his brother, who needs to tell him about a disturbing encounter with the spirit of a dead woman.
While the project is very short (it lasts less than 5 minutes), the enjoyment is huge. Filmmaker Pierantoni doesn’t waste a second and sets the audience on a hell of a ride in which we are quickly immersed in Jakob’s paranoia. Jakob, played by Christopher Prinsloo, is rightfully freaking out. He just met the spirit of a dead woman whose mouth has been slit and who asks him if he thinks she’s pretty, and now she is haunting him. He doesn’t know what to do so he seeks shelter in his brother’s flat, only to bring the newly found curse upon him as well. Now, the two brothers need to find a way out of this situation while dealing with a creepy ghost obsessed with beauty. The outcome? The audience will have to sit and wait, but if there is one thing we can say about it, it is that the film is very fun! Yes, is dark, twisted, and bloody… but the humor is always present and the performances live up to what you might expect from a project like this, especially from Prinsloo. Don’t get us wrong. Oscar Winter as Thomas, the brother who just wanted to relax, is convincing, and Khrystyne Haje is terrific as the hypnotizing Slit Mouth Woman… but Prinsloo’s madness injects the right amount of over-the-top adrenaline to make us feel the fear he is going through while cracking us up at the same time.
The production design is minimalist but this actually plays in its favor as it makes the film feel more realistic. There are no fancy locations or luxuries, which allow us to connect with the characters. Furthermore, the cinematography, editing, and practical effects help create a deliciously disturbing atmosphere.
This, along with a cleverly written script that tackles our never-ending obsession with beauty, makes I Feel Pretty a terrific option for horror comedy enthusiasts (and even more so for the Halloween season), and we can’t wait to watch Pierantoni’s next project.
